TEXAS

Trouble in Texas:  In the Texas Northeast #1 Jurisdiction, Auxiliary Bishop R. L. Williams is accused of bullying and oppressing the members of Forest Hill COGIC.  Here are copies of letters some of the members have sent to Bishop Sheard the Chairman of the Board of Bishops and the General Board.

VIRGINIA

Bishop Levi Willis: Virginia Third Jurisdiction
There is a case in Emporia, Virginia with St. Paul’s COGIC where the entire district transferred to the fairly new Fourth Jurisdiction.  This church was in the process of transferring but their Pastor, Superintendent Frank M. Batts died.  This is another case where the General Counsel for COGIC has appeared in court against the trustees. Here is St. Paul’s chronology, also in PDF form Chronology of Events for St. Paul COGIC.

Update

In the continuing saga in Emporia, Virginia; Here is a copy of a letter and recommendations from the General Council of Pastors and Elders of the Church of God in Christ.  Read Dr. Jenkins Cover letter , the Chairman of the Review Committee, now read the General Council of Pastors and Elders opinion.

INDIANA

Bishop Milton Hall  2003
Read the findings and opinion of the Indiana Court of Appeals concerning a COGIC property issue

Bishop Nathaniel W. Wells: Jurisdictional Prelate
Although his jurisdiction is in Michigan, there are some churches in Muncie, Indiana in his jurisdiction, (that is allowed).  One church whose pastor died is struggling with a Pastoral appointment.
Update: 9/11/2012

In Indiana, which is a neutral property state,  Bishop Willis and COGIC, Inc. ,in a counter claim, COGIC, Inc. claimed it held title to the real estate and  sought a  Judgement from the court to that effect.  COGIC, Inc. also alleged the Plaintiffs (local trustees) had removed fixtures from the real estate.  The trial court ruled that COGIC does not have an express or implied trust and ruled in favor of the local people on the issue of ownership.  She further stated the local membership and trustees own all eight parcels of land.

In their counter claim COGIC, inc was awarded $500.00 dollars plus interest until paid for an improper injunction, and the trustees had to put the signs back up they had taken down.  The court did not and cannot address the pastoral appointment, but stated Mt. Olive would have to take that up in the churches judicial system.   What that means is basically Elder Champion can preach, but he does not control the property.  If there is no trust in favor of the National Church, they are not complying with the judges ruling if they try to control the property.  Again COGIC, Inc has no ownership rights at all, at Mt. Olive located in Muncie, Indiana.   It appears this may be headed for a Pastors and Elders Council case.  Read the complete court ruling , here are a few of the highlights.
Here is the complete Mt. Olive decision in a PDF.  Mt Olive Order of Events.

KANSAS

Bishop Joseph C. Gilkey Sr:  Kansas Southwest Jurisdiction

(1)  New Jerusalem COGIC; Liberal, Kansas
1999 was the first time Bishop Joseph C. Gilkey sued a local congregation.   This happened in Liberal, Kansas and he was allowed to include the National Church as a Plaintiff, and forced the local people out.  He “Quit Claimed” the church to an Elder Arthur Foote, a Pastor in his jurisdiction, a clear violation of the Cogic Constitution, No action was taken from the Board of Bishops.  Was this the start of a notorious trend?  Read the New Jerusalem Appeal opinion from the Kansas Court of Appeals.  (Quit Claim in book form)

(2)  EMMANUEL COGIC; Wichita, Kansas
Church of God in Christ, INC, and Kansas Southwest Jurisdiction, sue a church in Wichita, Kansas.  Trustees, lay-members, and a someone who was not a member are named defendants.  In a stunning display of greed and arrogance, they tried to collect back tithes, and reports from 2005-2009 through the Civil Court which they claim would have gone up through the jurisdiction and to the National Church.   This was not granted. They also asked for, and were awarded 12 months rent at $2000.00 *a month on property the local people built and paid for with no state or national monies.  Like a third world dictator, they even placed a garnishment on a members wages.*

*As reported in “Is there Justice in the Church of God in Christ

OHIO

Read the heart wrenching story of Maurice Morris and the injustice he has suffered not only because of the actions of those in authority, but the inaction of his brothers and sisters in Christ.  When I last spoke with him, he questioned the existence of GOD because of what the church had allowed to happen.   Those who witnessed the injustice, and failed to tell of it , are guilty of the sin of omission.  I know that is strong but here is the scripture found in Leviticus and James;

“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” (James 4:17, AV)

“And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.” (Leviticus 5:1, AV)

“And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing” could be better translated, “if a person sin in this respect that he hears the voice of adjuration.” It has to do with the hearing of an oath and being a witness. If a witness has seen or knows something, but he withholds the truth to the detriment of some individual, then that is a sin of omission.

Thank you for sharing this heart wrenching account. It spotlights the nature of this hireling who scatters the flock. It also show the callous disregard the bishop has for the people.
